The Chicago Department of Public Health, in collaboration with the Mayor's Office, has committed more than $9 million to the  Healthy Chicago Equity Zones (HCEZ), a 4.5 year initiative that addresses the racial disparities that prevent many Chicago residents from being healthy. Breaking the city into six regions, the HCEZ collaborates with regional and community organizations to meet the particular needs of Chicago residents to increase their health and wellness outcomes. In the Southwest region, the Southwest Organizing Project is the regional lead.

Healthy Southwest Community Leads

Led by the Southwest Organizing Project, Healthy Southwest is a collaboration between 8 local organizations to move this health equity work forward throughout the southwest side. The partner organizations include PODER, Esperanza Health Centers, Southwest Collective, Increase the Peace, The Resurrection Project, Metropolitan Family Services, Envision Community Services, and the Southwest Organizing Project. While the focus of the first year was to increase COVID-19 vaccine uptake, the following 4 years will be dedicated to addressing six key issues across the region. The issue areas that the southwest region focuses on are Health, Education, Employment/Workforce Development, Safety and Immigration.

Public Health Ambassadors

Public Health Ambassadors, or PHAs, are community residents with a passion for public life and are the movers of the Healthy Southwest work. With over 40 PHAs across the southwest, they work on the ground outreaching in the community to connect residents to the information, resources, events, and opportunities they need to be healthy. Their work is more vital than ever as we work towards comprehensive wellness, while also building community and ensuring the voices of residents are heard.
